Wells Fargo & Myrtle Beach tips with 696/1 double

There are two events on the PGA Tour this week as the big names will head to the Wells Fargo Championship, with a most of other players in action at the Myrtle Beach Classic.

RFO tipster Ian Wilkerson has picked out his winners for each event and together they combine for a huge 696/1 double, which should be backed as an each-way bet.

All odds quoted come from bet365 and new customers can take advantage of their sign-up offer using the button below.

WELLS FARGO CHAMPIONSHIP – Wyndham Clark 16/1

The big guns are back on the PGA Tour this week but there is one big notable absentee for the field assembling at Quail Hollow for the Wells Fargo Championship.

The seemingly invincible world number one Scottie Scheffler is sitting this one out as his wife is about to give birth, so Rory McIlroy, a three-time winner at the South Carolina track and recent victor at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans is set to go off favourite.

There is a strong chance that his New Orleans win with friend Shane Lowry could be just what McIlroy needed after yet another disappointing trip to Augusta.

Consequently, there will be plenty of people keen to back him again at a venue where he has enjoyed so much success, but Wyndham Clark beat his 72-hole Quail Hollow record last year and could prove the man to beat.

Clark went on to win the US Open last summer following his Wells Fargo success, and he has done enough to suggest his first Major may not be his last.

He has already won the Pebble Beach Pro-Am this year and twice found only Scheffler too strong as he posted runner-up finishes in the Arnold Palmer Invitational and the Players.

Last year’s performance at Quail Hollow was superb as he posted a four-shot success and led the strokes-gained statistics for both approach and from tee to green, while also finishing third in the putting rankings.

That saw him gazump McIlroy’s previous tournament best and he should be equipped for another strong claim.

He missed the cut at the Masters, but debutants tend to have a tough time at Augusta and he showed no ill-effects from that disappointment by finishing third the following week at the RBC Heritage.

MYRTLE BEACH CLASSIC – Alex Smalley 40/1

There is no course form to go on for the second PGA Tour event, the Myrtle Beach Classic, which will take place in America’s premier golf resort the other side of the Carolinian state line.

Consequently, it is a competitive heat with South African Erik van Rooyen rated favourite although he was still available at 25-1 on Monday.

So it looks sensible to keep stakes moderate and concentrate on those who head to the Dunes Golf and Beach Club with some good recent form.

One interesting entrant is Alex Smalley, who seems to have got his house in order in the last couple of weeks.

He had missed the cut in seven straight events before finishing sixth at the Corales Puntacana in the Dominican Republic and while he and Matti Schmid missed the cut as partners at the Zurich Classic, he produced a decent 13th spot at last week’s CJ Cup.

This run corresponds with a similar sequence of results last year, where he was a creditable 18th at the Wells Fargo and subsequently finished ninth at the Travelers and second at the John Deere, so he could outplay his odds.
