Newcastle and Both Teams To Score

Reason for tip

Both teams have scored in six of Sheffield United’s last seven Premier League games and they can breach Newcastle’s defences, given the home team’s injuries. However the Blades have lost 13 of their 17 away games and look likely to fall to another.

Newcastle need to bounce back

Newcastle suffered a disappointing 2-0 defeat on the road to Crystal Palace on Wednesday but they are much stronger on home soil and hosting Sheffield United ranks as straightforward a game as can be in the Premier League this season.

The Magpies have recorded 11 of their 15 league wins at St James’ Park and ten of their 13 defeats have come on the road. Eddie Howe’s side are now three points shy of Manchester United in sixth and will need to get the better of these opponents if they are to keep hopes of a Europa League place for next season alive.

They did get the better of the Blades 8-0 at Bramall Lane when they met earlier in the season and the hosts would be mightily disappointed with anything but a win from this clash.

Injuries have dogged the Newcastle squad throughout the season and they look unlikely to be resolved any time soon, with the Magpies still missing as many as 11 first team players for this game.

Those injuries are particularly bad in defence, where Sven Botman, Jamaal Lascelles, Kieran Trippier, Matt Targett and Valentino Livramento are all injured.

That could lead to the Magpies being more open at the back than they would like against a Sheffield United team that have seen both teams score in six of their last seven games.

Blades in freefall

Sheffield United’s relegation back to the Championship looks like a formality and they are already setting a number of unwanted Premier League records. Their total of 92 goals conceded is already a record with four games to go and they look vulnerable again here.

Chris Wilder’s men have allowed 15 goals in their last five matches and may struggle to contain a Magpies forward line that put eight past them in the reverse fixture.

They can get on the scoresheet in this matchup, albeit in defeat and their relegation looks likely to be all but confirmed with a loss.

More goals at St. James’ Park?

Sheffield United’s haphazard defending means that five of their last seven Premier League away games have had four goals or more and a repeat of that looks likely here.

Correct score backers should side with a 4-1 win for Newcastle, who are much better at home and have netted at least three in three of their last four games at St James’ Park.

Anthony Gordon has been a revelation for Eddie Howe’s men this season, netting 11 goals, nine of which have come at home. He could add to that tally against this struggling Blades defence.
