Cheltenham Festival is an event that stretches beyond the usual horse racing enthusiasts. It draws crowds from across the sporting world, all keen to place a few bets and enjoy the spectacle.

1.30 Cheltenham: Supreme Novices’ Hurdle

Inthepocket found the ground too lively when second to Il Etait Temps at Leopardstown last time out but the six-year-old can reverse the form on a slower surface in the opening race of the 2023 festival. Stays further than 2m and promises to be better suited by a greater test of stamina.

The 12/1 shot has two wins and a second-place finish in three races with Rachel Blackmore in the saddle and he should contend again.

2.10 Cheltenham: Arkle

The 6/4 shot landed an Irish Arkle for the ages in brilliant fashion at Leopardstown last time and the field in this race is arguably weaker. Deserves to be the clear favourite and should beat Jonbon given the improvements he has made since the pair met at Aintree last April.

With four wins in his last five starts, look to El Fabiolo to land a win for Willie Mullins on the opening day.

2.50 Cheltenham: Ultima Handicap Chase

Nassalam is a superior animal on soft ground and conditions have come right for the 17/2 shot ahead of the Ultima Handicap Chase.

The six-year-old handles Cheltenham and is capable of further improvement ahead of the step up to this 3m1f trip. The stage looks set for a massive run following a fine third here over shorter distance in January.

3.30 Cheltenham: Champion Hurdle

Constitution Hill is a generational talent and worthy favourite who has looked better than ever this season. Landed a vintage Supreme Novices’ Hurdle last campaign in scintillating style and has the ability to handle testing ground is a plus. Should be far too strong.

4.10 Cheltenham: Mares’ Hurdle

Marie’s Rock was weak in the betting on her return in the Relkeel Hurdle in January but still managed to take apart a strong field under a 6lb penalty. She likes this ground and will be hitting the line hard.

4.50 Cheltenham: Boodles Juvenile Handicap Hurdle

Pedigree is all about stamina and will be suited by this type of test under a top 3lb claimer. Trainer Gordon Elliott has landed three of the previous ten runnings and his four-year-old can step forward in first-time cheekpieces.

5.30 Cheltenham: National Hunt Chase

The class act in the race, placing at two previous Cheltenham Festivals in stronger contests than this. Gaillard Du Mesnil’s stamina over this marathon trip is proven and the 10/11 favourite should oblige with a clear round on ground that suits.
