AFC Wimbledon vs West Ham United Predictions

League One’s bottom club AFC Wimbledon take on the Premier League’s West Ham at Kingsmeadow on Saturday evening in a real “David and Goliath” FA Cup 4th Round clash.

While Wimbledon are likely to be thrilled about the financial windfall coming their way from their televised fixture against one of English football’s biggest names, in football terms, their FA Cup run is almost certain to hit a brick wall.

Unsurprisingly, the struggling Dons have won only 1 of their last 6 matches. Incidentally that stand-alone victory was achieved in the last round of the FA Cup in a 3-2 win at Fleetwood Town.

The 3 cup goals Wimbledon plundered that afternoon were something of a rarity however – in fact, the Dons haven’t scored more than 2 goals in a single League One match this season.

West Ham come into Saturday evening’s tie itching to make amends for their disappointing 0-2 defeat at Bournemouth a week ago. The loss was only the Irons 3rd reverse in 11 outings, and Mauricio Pellegrini’s side have generally been playing some of their best football of the season over the past two months.

Goals have still been a little scarce for the Irons however, and West Ham have hit the net just 7 times in their last 7 fixtures. West Ham needed a 90th minute goal from Andy Carroll to add a little gloss to the scoreline in a 2-0 win against Birmingham City in the last round of the FA Cup.

West Ham’s games and performances against other lower league opposition in the Carabao Cup earlier in the season are much more salient however. Before they smashed 8 goals past a hapless Macclesfield Town side in late September, the Irons took on AFC Wimbledon in round 2 of the competition at Kingsmeadow.

The Hammers fell behind early on, but recovered in the second half to eventually run out 3-1 winners. That result was a bright point amid a dismal 4-match losing run for West Ham in the Premier League, though the Irons are in a much better place ahead of their latest visit to Kingston upon Thames.

West Ham have started to look a little more secure at the back of late. Before their 0-2 loss to Bournemouth at the weekend, the Irons had secured back-to-back clean sheets against Arsenal and Birmingham respectively.

On Saturday they face a Wimbledon team that has failed to score in a whopping 41% of their league matches this season. With that considered we’re backing West Ham to win while keeping a clean sheet this weekend.

The Irons lack of thrust at the other end of the pitch should ensure that the final score is kept to respectable levels from Wimbledon’s point of view however, and we’re tipping West Ham to win 2-0.
