Atletico Madrid vs Real Madrid Predictions
These two sides are certainly very familiar with each other. Not only do they share the same city but El Derbi Madrileño took places an astonishing 8 times last season with the teams meeting in every competition.
Atletico did the double over their rivals in the league famously winning 4-0 at the Vicente Calderon in February having already knocked Real out of the Copa del Rey and won the Spanish Super Cup meeting between the sides.
However as was the case in the previous season, Real Madrid won the biggest clash of all by securing a victory over their rivals in the Quarter Finals of the Champions League. The 7th and 8th meetings of the season between the sides were really tight encounters and it took a single goal from Javier Hernandez to seal a 1-0 aggregate win for Real Madrid, late in the 2nd leg.
The teams just know each other so well now you sense that neither is really going to be able to surprise the other. This will be the first meeting between Diego Simeone and Rafa Benitez though which adds a different dimension to the game but if anything it is only going to lead to a tighter game.
Both managers are known for running the rule over well-disciplined and defensively sound sides and that is certainly how it has proved so far. Real have only conceded once in 8 matches under the former Valencia, Napoli and Liverpool boss and that is all the more impressive when you consider usual first choice centre-backs Pepe and Sergio Ramos have been missing through injury.
Atletico meanwhile have kept 5 clean sheets so far in 8 competitive outings so it seems like a safe bet that at least one of these two defences will rule supreme here and there is value at 10/11 in backing ‘No’ in the Both Teams to Score market.
Derby games are always tough to predict and it is true that Diego Simeone has an outstanding record in Madrid derbies and prior to his reign, this game was rarely even a contest. However Los Blancos have looked a more solid outfit since the arrival of Benitez and there will be no repeat of their crushing 4-0 defeat in this fixture last year.
These two sides may well just end up cancelling each other out and a draw wouldn’t be a disaster for either at such an early stage in the season so consider backing it to finish 0-0 at long odds of 17/2.
