Atletico Mineiro vs Colon Predictions

Friday’s Copa Sudamericana semi-final, second leg clash sees Brazilians Atletico Mineiro doing battle with Argentines Colon de Santa Fe at the Mineirão. The visitors arrive in the driving seat after winning last week’s first leg.

Having seen off Union La Calera, Botafogo and La Equidad to reach this point, Atletico Mineiro had been meeting all expectations in the Copa Sudamericana but their path to the final now looks a complicated one, following a poor showing in last week’s first leg. Galo struggled in Santa Fe and played in a very defensive manner, blowing a 1-0 lead to lose by a 2-1 margin.

The hosts are coming under massive pressure at the moment and if they fail to turn this tie around, then it’s not hard to imagine boss Rodrigo Santana being dismissed. Indeed, the team are in terrible all round form, losing their last 5 matches across all competitions and that has them coming into Friday’s match extremely low on confidence.

Meanwhile, whilst at points of last week’s game it looked like being a frustrating evening for Colon, they rallied well in the second half and managed to turn the score around to bring an advantage with them to Belo Horizonte. Los Sabaleros controlled most of the game and now look on course to reach the final, having thus far done well to eliminate Deportivo Municipal, River Plate (URU), Argentinos Juniors and Zulia from the competition.

Colon are running along nicely under Pablo Lavallen and confidence can be extremely high coming into this game. The visitors have lost just 1 of their last 7 matches across all competitions and having conceded just once in their 4 Sudamericana away ties so far this year, they’ve already shown they have the ability to make themselves tricky to break down.

Ultimately, we said in our preview of the first leg we sensed an air of vulnerability about Atletico and fancied Colon to pull of an upset and that still remains the case. Atletico are in terrible shape, are coming under huge pressure from their fans and just don’t look like having the ability to turn this tie around.

As such, we really like the look of backing Colon on the Double Chance line at a very appealing price. They are playing in a highly consistent manner and are a well organised unit and we think they’ll be able to keep things tight on Friday and book themselves a place in the final via a 0-0 stalemate on the night.
