Augsburg vs Wolfsburg Predictions
After four successful seasons under coach Makus Weinzierl, Augsburg turned a new page this summer, with new coach Dirk Schuster arriving from Darmstadt 98 to replace the Schalke 04-bound tactician. Under Weinzierl’s leadership Augsburg succeeded in establishing themselves as a top flight side and participated in a memorable maiden UEFA Europa League campaign. Coach Schuster’s next step will no doubt be to try and and push Augsburg up to top-ten material after their 12th placed finish last season. Alfred Finnbogason’s loan move has been made permanent, he scored seven goals in fourteen appearances for Augsburg last season, and it is hoped that the Icelandic striker continues his form going forward.
Last season was something of an anomaly for the 2014/2015 Bundesliga runners up: their best ever year in European competition, qualifying for a place in the quarter finals of the UEFA Champions League against Real Madrid, contrasted with season-long inconsistency in the Bundesliga which saw them fail to qualify for Europe for this season due to an 8th placed finish. Coach Dieter Hecking has kept his position and aims to rectify this under-performance. Striker Mario Gomez (26 goals in 33 appearances for Besiktas), who featured this summer for Germany in the Euros, has been brought in from Italian side Fiorentina alongside Daniel Didavi, Borja Mayoral and Jakub Blaszczykowski. No doubt Wolfsburg want to ensure that they are once again amongst the leading clubs this season.
This match should be a tricky opener for both sides and the hosts boast a solid record against Wolfsburg: four wins, four draws, and just two defeats in ten meetings. Wolfsburg have certainly splashed a bit more money around the transfer window than the hosts, which will do wonders to improve their squad, but Augsburg are largely unchanged since their 2-0 win away to Wolfsburg just a few months back. Recent records show that this fixture tends to be a low-scoring and tight affair – all five of the last five meetings between the two sides had under 2.5 goals scored.
Given that Wolfsburg are improved since their 2-0 defeat to Augsburg earlier this year and that 40% of all previous fixtures between the two side have ended in a draw, we expect the result here to mirror that. Draw at 23/10 and a 1-1 draw at 5/1 with bet365 are our choice bets for this Bundesliga match.
