Ayr United vs Aberdeen Predictions

Ayr United had a very successful season last term as they took advantage of Peterhead’s late collapse in the Scottish League One to beat them to 2nd place. This set them up for a promotion playoff against Peterhead, whom they beat, before dispatching  Stranraer to earn promotion to the Scottish Championship.

They have attempted to carry that form through to the new season as well, beating top flight opposition Hamilton Academical in their opening Scottish League Cup fixture. This set them up nicely to win their group in the reformatted League Cup and, despite a defeat to St. Mirren. they managed to come 2nd in the group with nine points from a possible 12, trailing Hamilton Academical on goal difference.

Ayr United’s opening round of the Scottish Championship didn’t go quite so well though, with them losing 2-0 at home to Raith Rovers to make it four wins and three defeats in their last seven outings. They couldn’t have dreamt of a much tougher tie at this stage of the Scottish League Cup either.

Aberdeen looked excellent for a large proportion of last season as they started at a blistering pace and put reigning champions Celtic under real pressure. Their title challenge was maintained for most of the season but in the end a few avoidable defeats put them out of the running. They ended the season with five defeats from their last six games to finish 15 points behind the winners in 2nd.

Their qualification for the Europa League meant they were afforded a bye in the group stages of the Scottish League Cup but their hopes of reaching the group stages were brought to an end last week as Maribor claimed a 1-0 victory at home to make it 2-1 on aggregate.

The visitors followed this disappointment with a drab goalless draw against St. Johnstone in the opening round of the Scottish Premiership, so they will be hoping to inject some positivity into the early stages of this season.

I’m expecting the visitors to come out with a lot of purpose on Wednesday as they look to bounce back from a disappointing week and they certainly have the quality to punish Ayr United. The hosts struggled against St. Mirren in the group stage of this competition and looked a bit out of their depth against Raith Rovers at the weekend, so I think odds of 1.875 for an Aberdeen -1.0 Asian Handicap Win are good value for money. I’m going for a 2-0 correct score prediction at 13/2 as well.
