Bayern Munich vs Atletico Madrid Predictions
The 1st Leg last week was an entertaining game despite only producing 1 goal, scored brilliantly by Atleti’s Saul. Atleti had chances to add to their advantages but Bayern also came close to netting what would have been a crucial away goal. A 1-0 win in the home leg is a great result in European competition particularly when you are as strong at the back as Atletico Madrid.
They come into this in great form having won all of their last 6 matches. They’ve won all of their last four by 1-0 margins, with the most recent coming at home to Rayo Vallecano on Saturday in La Liga. Perhaps most impressively they’ve been without key central defender Diego Godin for all but 11 minutes of those fixtures but have still been very tough to break down even with Savic or Hernandez taking his place but the Uruguayan could return here.
Bayern were favourites to win the tie and the competition when the Semi-Finals kicked off but they face a tall order here. They could only draw 1-1 at home to Borussia Monchengladbach at the weekend to leave them still waiting to clinch the Bundesliga and their Champions League run hasn’t been entirely convincing in the knock-out phase. They conceded 4 goals over 2 legs against Juventus and were within minutes of going out when Thomas Muller scored a last minute leveller to take the tie to extra-time. Their 3-2 aggregate win over Benfica in the last round was closer than many expected and they will know a big performance is needed here.
Atleti though are the perfect team for this situation, protecting a 1-0 lead. They have pacey players like Griezmann and Carrasco who will be a threat on the break as Bayern chase this game so a potentially decisive away goal can’t be ruled out at all but their defence is also very well-equipped to deal with the almost inevitable Bayern onslaught. The Germans need to win by 2 goals or more if they are to progress by any other method than a penalty shoot-out, which would only take place should Bayern win 1-0. However Atletico haven’t been beaten by 2 goals or more in any of their last 72 matches.
They have the best away record in La Liga and have scored on each of their 3 trips to the Santiago Bernabeu or Camp Nou this season, games which have all ended in scorelines that would see them through here. They have no reason to fear a trip to Munich and although there are likely to be a few nervy moments backing Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid to qualify at 4/6 looks good.
