Belgium vs Scotland Predictions

Belgium have made a flying start to the latest qualifying campaign, but will that continue against new Scotland boss Steve Clarke? The former Kilmarnock boss also got off to a great start at the weekend, claiming a 2-1 victory over Cyprus in his first game in charge. That has got Scotland back in the fight for a top two finish in this group, but can their qualification hopes survive Tuesday’s clash with Belgium?

The Red Devils are out to land silverware this time around, following their third-place finish at the World Cup last summer. They’ve got the squad for a challenge, while some of this golden generation are heading towards the end of their prime. That means that the Belgians are probably stronger than ever before, but they now have one major shot at glory left, in 2020, so they should make short work of qualifying.

Scotland have a trickier route to the finals next summer, especially given how long they’ve spent out of major tournaments. However, this squad could finally do it, with two chances to make the Euros. Their Nations League success has given them a spot in next year’s playoffs, while they are still in the fight for second place in this group. The Scots have to contend with Russia and Kazakhstan for a top-two finish, but Steve Clarke’s leap to the national set-up should bring some positivity back to this side.

Clarke was able to hit the ground running with Killie, pulling off results against sides with much better resources than his own. He’ll need that spirit to just make an impact on this game, but his side are in decent form. The Scots come into this clash with four wins in their last five games, having scored 11 goals in that time. They’ll be aiming to continue that against a Belgium side who did concede at home to Russia in their opening group game.

If there is anywhere that is a concern for Roberto Martinez, it’s the defence.  Belgium have a high scoring home record, but their defence isn’t unbreakable. With Scotland in good form going forward we see them faring better than their 4-0 home loss to Belgium in the Autumn. We’re going with both teams to score as our tip for this clash.
