Borussia Dortmund vs Hamburg Predictions
Borussia Dortmund and Thomas Tuchel will be hugely disappointed being on the wrong side of one of the most dramatic comebacks in Europe League history last Thursday, being knocked out at the quarter-final stage. Dortmund held, at one point during the game, a 4-2 lead on aggregate, with the away goal advantage in their favour, and were overthrown by Liverpool’s aggressive all out attack which saw Liverpool clinch the 4-3 home win in the 91st minute (5-4 on aggregate) and see themselves through to the semi-finals. “Der BVB” will have to refocus and turn their attention back to the Bundesliga, where they trail seven points behind league leaders Bayern Munich, who could increase that gap to ten points with a victory over Schalke 04 on Saturday – there is no further room for error in the title chase with only five matches remaining this season.
Hamburger SV come into this one in tenth place, but standing only six points above the relegation zone, they are still in need of points to safeguard their status as the only founding Bundesliga member never to have been relegated, particularly with the huge “6 pointer” North-German derby against Werder Bremen next weekend. Despite inconsistent recent form, Bruno Labbadia’s side can have confidence in their recent record against Dortmund, winning three of their last four league meetings and drawing the other. Hamburg’s last visit to the Signal-Iduna-Park in the 2014/2015 season, where they were relegation strugglers, ended in a 1-0 victory, giving Hamburg the current “bogey team” title.
Hamburg may fancy their chances given that since the Summer of 2012, Dortmund have suffered more defeats against Hamburg (five) than against any other Bundesliga club. However, despite Dortmund’s shock and hard-fought loss to Liverpool in the Europa League last Thursday, they are a better team this year and the only top-flight side yet to lose at home in the Bundesliga this season. Borussia Dortmund should be capable of refocusing themselves ahead of this game and we expect Dortmund to continue their crushing Bundesliga form in 2016 (W9 D3 from 12 matches). Dortmund have, however, failed to keep a clean sheet since mid-March and Hamburg are in decent goal-scoring form (5 goals from the last 3 matches). This should be an exciting match as no other Bundesliga fixture has, historically, had more goals – 345 goals in 97 previous meetings, an average of 3.5 goals per game. Combining the analysis above with the statistic below, we expect both teams to score and a final score of Borussia Dortmund 3-1 at 10/1 to be solid bets in this match.
