Borussia Dortmund vs Werder Bremen Predictions
Borussia Dortmund have a busy and important month ahead that will determine whether or not BVB will win any silverware this season. Alongside their pursuit of FC Bayern München in the Bundesliga title race, Thomas Tuchel’s Dortmund have to navigate matches in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Europa League against Liverpool and the semi-finals of the DFB Cup against Hertha BSC. Dortmund have 64 points from 27 games so far this season, and though they trail 5 points behind league leaders Bayern Munich, this number would have already won them the title in the 2000/2001 Bundesliga campaign.
Visitors Werder Bremen do not have such high aims coming to the end of this season, with survival being the main objective. Viktor Skripnik’s Bremen have struggled for the majority of the season, but after recording two wins and two draws in their last five matches, they have climbed their way out of the relegation zone. Bremen may stand in 14th place but they are far from safety, just one point above automatic relegation, with every match bringing ever closer an end of season survival battle in the Bundesliga that could include as many as ten teams.
Despite Werder Bremen’s relatively good form in the past weeks – including back to back 4-1 wins against Bayer Leverkusen and Hannover 96 – Borussia Dortmund have been the best team since the league recommenced after the winter break, earning 26 out of a possible 30 points. Dortmund are unbeated in their 15 competitive games in 2016, winning 13 and drawing two. Werder Bremen, less impressively, have failed to keep a sheet in all 27 games in the Bundesliga this season.
Dortmund’s top scorer Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (35 goals in 40 appearances across all competitions) is due a goal, having not found the net in the last 3 Bundesliga matches, and is exactly the type of player to take advantage of such defensive inconsistency. Bremen’s veteran striker Claudio Pizarro, however, is also in form having scored 6 goals in the last 4 (including a hattrick against Bayer Leverkusen) and if he scores in this match he will become Bremen’s out-and-out all-time leading goalscorer with 102 goals. So don’t expect Werder Bremen to go down without a fight. Combining the above analysis and the statistics shown below, expect both teams to score and Borussia Dortmund to win and with a final score of 3-1 to Dortmund at 9/1 both being probable outcomes to this match.
