Burton fans are already having quite a season with their side in the Second tier for the first time ever and to draw Liverpool at home in the League Cup makes for just another huge occasion at the Pirelli. They’ve certainly given the Championship a good go so far and there have been plenty of goals in all of their games. They come into this match on a real high, following their first league win last week when they beat Sheffield Wednesday 3-1 at home followed by a 2-2 draw at Blackburn which came courtesy of a last gasp equaliser from Tom Naylor.

The only man who might have liked a somewhat less glamorous draw here is Nigel Clough. Burton host East Midlands rivals Derby County on Friday night in another landmark moment for the club, and the former Derby manager may feel as though he has no choice but to rotate some of his players here.

Liverpool will certainly do that and, following a 2-0 defeat at Burnley, some of the players who come in may feel they can send a message to Jurgen Klopp with a strong performance in this game. The Reds had an incredible 81% possession in that game but still lost, although they do at least have 3 points on the board following their 4-3 win at Arsenal on the opening day. Liverpool made the final of this competition last year and, without any European involvement this season, are likely to be targeting the domestic cups as their best chance of ending their wait for silverware.

This game has the potential to produce goals and quite a few of them. Burton have showed no fear playing against bigger names and they’ll give this a go. Both teams have scored in all of their 5 matches so far this season and they’ve produced 23 goals in total. Liverpool will clearly try to take the game to their Championship opponents, but their obvious defensive vulnerabilities have been pretty apparent in their opening two games and Burton should get chances.
