Carabobo vs Junior Predictions

Carabobo lifted the Venezuelan Primera Division title back at the start of November, but they almost slipped up at the end. They won just one of their final six games in the competition and eventually remained at the top by just a single point in the overall table for the season.

Prior to this poor ending they were sensational though, winning 11 and drawing three of their 14 preceding matches in all competitions to make it through to the Copa Libertadores for the first time since 1974. They haven’t been involved in any continental competitions since their 2007 Copa Sudamerica appearance either, and they have never made it past the second round in either of these tournaments.

It’s not hard to figure out why. The Venezuelan football scene isn’t exactly booming and filled with talent, whilst the likes of Brazil and Argentina continue to dominate proceedings in South America.

Junior hail from Colombia, which isn’t quite up to the standards of Brazil and Argentina but is a lot more respected than the Venezuelans are. Junior finished 5th in last season’s Colombian Primera A, 14 points off winners Santa Fe but managing to quality for the Copa Libertadores for the first time since 2012.

It’s been a long five years for Junior after they qualified for three consecutive Copa Libertadores, but the last couple of years have seen them make a resurgence and qualify for the Copa Sudamerica instead. Now they are finally back in the big leagues.

This was thanks to an impressive end of season push to make it into the top five, with them winning four and drawing one of their final five league games. Their defeat to Atletico Nacional in the Colombian Cup put a bit of a dampener on things though. Away from home they did struggle last season though, winning just one of their last 12 games and losing six of them.

Contintentally they made it to the Copa Sudamerica quarter finals last season, only to be knocked out by eventual finalists Chapacoense, who then went on to suffer a tragic loss on their way to the final.

The visitors have managed to win three of their last five trips away in Europe though, and they’re clear favourites for this tie with their overall quality advantage. Carabobo were disappointing in the closing stages of the season, so backing a Junior Win at 11/8 looks a good choice along with a 2-1 correct score predictions at 9/1.
