Cheltenham vs Morecambe Predictions

  • Cheltenham conceded at least 1 goal in 77% of their home matches.
  • Cheltenham have scored in 92% of their home matches.
  • Morecambe have scored seven times in their five matches.

Success on the back of defensive stability

Cheltenham Town have had an excellent start to the campaign and with over half of the season gone, they are well in the running for the top seven. However, they also come into this clash following a defeat last weekend and a draw on Tuesday evening so they will be determined to ensure that this dip is only as they try and keep pace with the top seven.

Much of their success has come thanks to their ability to keep the opposition at bay and Cheltenham actually boast the best defensive record in League 2, with just 23 goals conceded from their 28 games this season. However, at home it is more a case of putting the ball in the back of the net rather than keeping it out as they have scored in 92% of their matches on home soil and average an impressive 2.15 goals per game in front of their own fans.

Another relegation dog fight

It almost seems as if the old saying of only a few things in life are permanent needs amending so the answer becomes, death, taxes and Morecambe in a fight to save their spot in the Football League. The Shrimps have been in this position plenty of time previously so the prospect of being second from bottom will be nothing new to them, but they will know that they need to put points on the board if they are to start to secure their spot in League 2 for next season.

Fortunately for the visitors, over the past few weeks that is exactly what they have been doing as they have suffered just one defeat in their last five outings. Much of this turnaround in form has come thanks to being able to find the back of the net on a much more regular basis and they have scored seven times in those same five outings.

Goals are the order of the day

With both of these sides needing three points for very different reasons, we think it could prove to be an entertaining afternoon at Whaddon Road. The hosts are free scoring on home soil and play in a much more open and offensive fashion than they do when on the road. Meanwhile, the visitors have the worst defensive record in the league but have improved their goal output in recent weeks. With this in mind, backing both teams to score looks to be the way to go.

In terms of a correct score tip, we think that the hosts should prove to be too strong and should come out on top. They average an impressive 2.15 goals per game on home soil and are against a side who have conceded an average of two goals per game on the road. This open play has seen the hosts slightly more vulnerable at the back with them conceding an average of 1.08 goals per game at home, which indicates backing a 2-1 away win looks to be the smart move to make.
