Denmark vs Liechtenstein Predictions
Denmark missed out on Euro 2016 in the summer by the narrowest of margins. They made it to the playoffs of the qualification period after finishing 3rd in their qualifying group behind Portugal and the plucky Albania.
This drew them against arch rivals Sweden for a two legged playoff clash, with Sweden legend Zlatan Ibrahimovic leading his team to a 2-1 victory in Sweden before drawing 2-2 in Denmark to beat them 4-3 on aggregate.
However, positive signs are there for Denmark. They have a squad filled to the brim with potential talent that could lead them to some unexpected places in the next few years. Kasper Schmeichel and Simon Kjaer provide experience at the back, whilst young Borussiua Monchengladbach defenders Andreas Christensen and Jannick Vestergaard are promising for the future. Midfield has the likes of Christian Eriksen, Thomas Delaney and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg to call upon, and Viktor Fischer is a developing talent up front.
They have a fairly good chance in the upcoming World Cup qualifiers as well, but their major threat to the automatic qualification spot will be Poland. Instead, they may have to settle for a battle with Romania for the potential playoff spot.
Liechtenstein are the perennial whipping boys for their qualification groups though. They finished 5th in the Euro 2016 qualifiers having picked up just five points from their ten games, four of which came from games against Moldova. They have both Spain and Italy in their World Cup qualifying group too, so Liechtenstein, Macedonia, and Israel will likely be fighting for pride for the next two years.
Liechtenstein’s last win was in a friendly against San Marino in March 2015, and since then they have lost seven and drawn two of their nine games to make for the beginning of another possibly huge winless streak. They also face Spain away from home on Monday, so they will be looking for damage limitation there.
Denmark are obviously huge favourites for this clash, and they deserve to be. I’m expecting a landslide victory for them as they gear up for a competitive match against Armenia on Sunday. Denmark could try-out some new formations in this friendly in preparation, but one constant will be Christian Eriksen.
He is Denmark’s star player and one attack minded player who is all but guaranteed a spot. The strikeforce has a number of good youth prospects vying for position, but no attacking midfielder is close to giving Eriksen competition. He managed to grab a hat trick in June when they beat Bulgaria 4-0, and I think there’s a good chance he can get on the score-sheet on Wednesday. Odds of 6/5 for Christian Eriksen to Score Anytime look good value to me, so I’m going for that along with a 4-0 win for Denmark at 11/2.
