Hearts will travel north to Methil were East Fife will host them at Bayview Stadium. Can the Fifers cause an upset and make it through to the next round?

East Fife caused an upset on Tuesday night when they beat the then group leaders Dundee United at Tanandice. The Fifers came away with a 2-0 result and 3 very important points in their pockets that keeps their dreams of progressing alive. The game was at stalemate until the 38th minute when Aaron Dunsmore opened the scoring for the visitors, with Liam Watt doubling East Fife’s lead 6 minutes into the second-half and securing the win.

Darren Young’s side also beat Stenhousemuir 2-0 in their previous League Cup game, whilst also suffering the same outcome but against their favour in their first match of the competition. Prior to that, the Fifers had beaten Albion Rovers, drawn with Dundee United and lost to Queen of the South in their pre-season friendlies.

Hearts were seemingly heading towards disaster on Wednesday when they faced bottom-placed Stenhousemuir at Tynecastle. Levein’s side were incapable of breaking down the visitors’ defence and ultimately conceded a goal15 minutes from the end in their attempts to do so. However, Craig Halkett came to the Jambos’ rescue as he scored twice in 5 minutes to bring Hearts level and then give them the lead in the 87th minute, securing 3 points and ensuring that the Edinburgh club keep the top spot in the group.

Levein’s men have racked up 8 points from their first 3 League Cup games, drawing with Dundee United and picking up the bonus point, as well as beating Cowdenbeath 2-0 before suffering a defeat at the hand of Cambridge United in a pre-season friendly in preparation for their last couple of games.

East Fife still have a chance of finishing 2nd in their League Cup group, but they need to pull off a massive result and upset if they’re to do so. Moreover, a draw and a bonus point in the penalty shoot-out would benefit the Fifers, but Hearts will be eager to continue winning their games. We’re going to back the Edinburgh club to win & both teams to score and take all 3 points here, as the gulf in quality will more than likely be enough for them to do so, with a final score of 4-1.
