Faroe Islands vs Hungary Predictions
Faroe Islands are set to embark on another ultimately fruitless World Cup qualification campaign. They are regulars at the bottom of their qualification tables, although last time out the dismal Greece managed to beat them to the bottom spot. Faroe Islands finished with six points from their ten games and beat Greece on head to head records to finish 5th.
They are likely to finish in the same position in these World Cup qualifiers as well. Portugal are the group favourites followed by Switzerland and then Hungary. After that Latvia should come 4th, but it’s more than likely that Faroe Islands will be able to outperform the dismal Andorra.
Last time out Faroe Islands played against the newly integrated Kosovo and lost 2-0 in the round of friendlies prior to Euro 2016. This came after a rare win against Liechtenstein in March, and prior to that they had managed to beat Greece twice in the qualifiers. Overall though their form record is dismal with three wins and nine defeats in their last 13 games.
Hungary managed to break into Euro 2016 after finishing 3rd in a relatively easy group. Northern Ireland and Romania topped the tables, but Hungary outperformed Finland to make it to the playoffs before beating Norway 3-1 on aggregate to book their place in France.
They kicked their campaign off in France with a very impressive 2-0 win over dark horses Austria before earning a point against Iceland. Their best performance by far saw them take the lead three times against group favourites and eventual winners Portugal though, although they could only muster a point from the 3-3 draw. Belgium proved too much for them in the knockout stages though as they dismantled them in a 4-0 thrashing.
It was a very impressive performance overall in France, and their incisive attacking was one of the highlights of an eventful tournament. This doesn’t bode well for Faroe Islands, who have lost nine of their last 11 home games and conceded three or more goals in six of their last nine games at home.
This awful defending combined with Hungary’s ruthless attacking in France makes odds of 6/4 for Hungary Over 2.5 Team Goals look a good value bet to me, so I’m backing that along with a 3-1 correct score prediction at 11/1.
