Faroe Islands vs Portugal Predictions
Faroe Islands continued their promising start to these World Cup qualifiers on Friday when they surprisingly beat Latvia 2-0 away from home to take their tally to four points from two games.
This victory followed on from a very respectable goalless draw at home to Hungary, and although they are very unlikely to be challenging Portugal and Switzerland for the top two spots, they can be proud of their showing so far. Euro 2016 qualifying saw them end the ten group games with just six points, and they are already two thirds of the way there in just 20% of the games.
Portugal are likely to be a much tougher test for the hosts though. The Euro 2016 champions are coming into this on the back of a 6-0 hammering of Andorra, with Cristiano Ronaldo in fine form as he notched four goals by himself.
This was a good way to recover from their opening game defeat at Switzerland, and they have somewhat of a history of being ruthless against the underdogs. They hammered Gibraltar 5-0 in September and beat Estonia 7-0 in one of the warm up friendlies for Euro 2016.
Latvia’s home record isn’t the best either. They have lost nine, drawn two, and won one of their last 12 outings, conceding three or more goals in six of these 11 games and scoring just seven goals at the other end.
The fact that Ronaldo is on song is a huge blow to their chances of avoiding a thrashing here. They may be high on confidence, but trying to stop Ronaldo will be incredibly difficult for their defenders.
I’m expecting Portugal to get another rather comfortable victory, so I’m backing Portugal -2.0 Asian Handicap at 1.900 along with a 3-0 correct score prediction at 11/2.
