Augsburg vs Stuttgart Predictions

FC Augsburg are looking to give their relegation survival hopes a boost against South-German neighbours VfB Stuttgart this Saturday. Augsburg are three points worse off than their visitors ahead of this match, with last Saturday’s turnaround, against the run of play, 2-1 win at Werder Bremen – courtesy of goals from Icelandic striker Alfred Finnbogason and South Korean defender Jeong-Ho Hong – seeing Augsburg pull themselves out of the relegation zone at Bremen’s expense. That was Augsburg’s first win in their last seven (W1 D3 L4) and as they only stand two points above Bremen and the relegation play off spot, and three points above automatic relegation, any slip up could be crucial this close to the end of the season.

VfB Stuttgart may be on a run of four games without a win (D2 L2), the first time this has happened since Jurgen Kramny was appointed coach in December, but they have had a tough run of fixtures, such as last Saturday’s 3-1 defeat to league leaders Bayern Munich. Despite putting in a spirited performance against last year’s champions, they were only able to take away a consolation goal. Stuttgart stand in 12th place in the Bundesliga and still have a five-point cushion on the relegation zone, making them one of the favourites to survive the drop.

Augsburg have only picked up eleven points from their fourteen matches at home this season (W2 D5 L7) and they are without a win at home in five matches (D3 L2). Comparatively, despite Stuttgart being in shaky form, they have only lost one match away from home in the last seven (W2 D4 L1). Both teams have no problems scoring goals, with Stuttgart in particular playing a very aggressive style, averaging 2 goals per match away from home, and Augsburg scoring at least one goal in each of their last seven games. However, both teams are very susceptible defensively and are conceding far too many goals, hence their struggle around the bottom half of the table and relegation zone. Combining the analysis above with the statistics below, we expect Stuttgart to fancy their chances against a team with such poor home form. Stuttgart (Draw No Bet) and Stuttgart to win 2-1 at 9/1 seem like top value bets for this match.
