Ingolstadt vs Freiburg Predictions
Ingolstadt’s resurgence under new coach Maik Walpurgis continued with a dominant 2-1 win away to Bayer Leverkusen. Ingolstadt have taken ten points from five matches (W3 D1 L1) under Walpurgis’ reigns, including a shock 1-0 win at home to title contenders RB Leipzig, which has pushed them from the bottom of the Bundesliga to within just 1 point of Werder Bremen and safety from the relegation zone.
Meanwhile, Freiburg are now three unbeaten following a tight 1-1 draw away to Schalke 04. The South Germans now have more points on the board before the Christmas break (20) than in either of their last two seasons in the top flight (15 in the 2014/2015 season and just 14 in the 2013/2014 season). Freiburg should fancy their chances to improve on this tally in one final match against Ingolstadt before the winter break.
Ingolstadt are the bookies favourites ahead of this match at 5/4, but Freiburg’s recent “stubbornness” on the road – Freiburg have lost just one of their last four Bundesliga away matches against Bremen (won), Leverkusen (drew), Schalke (drew) and Mainz (lost) – means we feel that both teams to score at 3/4 is the safer bet here for the following reasons: Freiburg may be consistent in-front of goal, but they’ve also been conceding consistently – both teams have scored in four of Freiburg’s last five Bundesliga matches and in seven of their eight away matches this season (87.5%). Ingolstadt’s slow start to the 2016/2017 campaign does see them head into this match as one of the lowest scoring sides in the Bundesliga (13 goals). However, the “Schanzer” have not failed in any of their last five Bundesliga matches since Walpurgis took charge.
Regarding a correct score bet, the limited head-2-head results favour the hosts and despite Freiburg’s reasonable recent results on the road, it must be noted that Ingolstadt’s significantly improved performances have been against top sides like Leipzig and Leverkusen. As such, we feel the host’s better momentum could be all that it takes to clinch the win here. Hence, Ingolstadt to win 2-1 at 8/1 should be a reasonable shout.
