FC Utrecht Reserves vs Cambuur Leeuwarden Predictions
After four wins and a draw from their opening five games of the season, Cambuur supporters are dreaming of a return to Eredivisie at the third time of asking. Rene Hake’s side are flying at the top of the table heading into match day six, where they’ll be rated strong favourites to see off strugglers Jong Utrecht.
Cambuur’s fantastic form continued last week as goals from Kevin van Kippersluis and Justin Mathieu sealed a 2-0 victory against last season’s 6th placed side Telstar.
Telstar went into that fixture seeking a third win on the bounce and provided a real test for Rene Hake’s men who appear to be gaining confidence week by week.
Cambuur’s opening night draw at NEC looks priceless now, as their last gasp fight back for a 2-2 score line has given them real belief that they can mix it with the teams that are rated as favourites for promotion this term.
The Yellow Blues beat Jong AZ 2-1 at Cambuurstadion on match day two, and haven’t looked back since, beating TOP Oss 1-3 and RKC Waalwijk 2-0 prior to their most recent success against Telstar.
Cambuur have a tough few weeks ahead of them with Sparta Rotterdam, Roda JC, Go Ahead Eagles and defending champions Jong Ajax all in their way before the end of October, but for now they can focus on what seems to be a fairly straightforward fixture on the road this Friday.
Jong Utrecht finished bottom of the table in 2017/18 and were grateful beneficiaries of the current freeze on relegation to Tweede Divisie.
They kept faith in boss Robin Pronk, despite a woeful campaign that saw them lose 25 of their 38 Eerste Divisie games, but there hasn’t been much sign of improvement in the first five matches of the new season.
Jong Utrecht’s only high points thus far came via a 3-2 home victory against a lacklustre Jong PSV side a fortnight ago, and they’ve lost their other four fixtures for the concession of 12 goals in total.
Last week’s 3-1 reversal away to Almere City followed defeats to Go Ahead Eagles (5-0), NEC (1-2) and Telstar (2-0) on match days 1-3, and Friday’s hosts need to address their defensive problems quickly or they’ll soon be involved in a battle to avoid propping up the table once again.
Cambuur should be licking their lips in anticipation of this match and they’ll expect to maintain their dominant head to head record between the sides.
Cambuur have won three and drawn one of the teams’ four previous meetings, including a 1-3 triumph in last term’s corresponding fixture, and we fancy them to clinch all three points here.
We think the visitors will be far too good, but we do expect Jong Utrecht to get on the scoresheet, as they have done three times this season and in three of those past four clashes with the Leeuwarden outfit.
In the correct score market, we’re drawn to a 1-3 full time result in favour of Cambuur. Karim Rossi and Justin Mathieu have eight goals between them already this term, and we think they’ll get plenty of joy against this young, shaky and inexperienced Utrecht side.
