FC Zurich vs Young Boys Predictions
Young Boys have been in scintillating form this season with nine wins out of their opening 10 games but they managed to lose 3-2 two weeks ago to mid-table Luzern so Zürich could take advantage of this opportunity to close the gap at the top to eight points.
Young Boys have generally been so dominant this season with them only failing to win one of their 10 league games this season. They currently have a +25 goal-difference and didn’t concede in any of their first three games, while scoring eight in these matches.
Since then they have still been so formidable, but they did have this trend creeping up of them having to outscore the opponent in order to get three points. This was notable in their wins over Xamax (5-2), Luzern (3-2) and even second division FC Schaffh (3-2). They were still getting wins but failed to recreate the dominant fashion they went about their business at the start of the season.
This all boiled to a tipping point when they came up against Luzern again. Luzern were a team that Young Boys had beaten five consecutive times and a team winless in three but, as they managed in their first league encounter with the champions, they really pushed them over the edge with great play from Pascal Schurpf and a brilliant late comeback which saw them score twice in the final eight minutes to win the game 3-2. It was a feisty game and one that almost came to blows after Michel Aebischer was carded for a horrible foul but ultimately Young Boys got caught out here and didn’t show any of the qualities which saw them win the league last year.
This was still a game that Young Boys dominated though with 63% of the possession and almost 350 passes so the champions will be eager to get back to winning ways against Zürich here.
These teams have already met this season in week three when Young Boys won 4-0 but Zürich have been in a great run of form and will fancy themselves to get a better result this time round.
Zürich have won five and drawn two of their last seven games in all competitions, keeping five clean sheets in that time in what has been a pretty special period for the club. They currently sit second in the table but haven’t won the league since 2009 which is ultimately the current goal of the club so they will need to push on from this form and a win over the champions would put them in good stead.
They have had some pretty inconsistent form generally though with four wins and four draws in their opening ten games, Ludovic Magnin’s side seem to have cured that problem though with this nice run of results. Zürich have only won one of their last five games against Young Boys but are unbeaten in their last 12 home games and will be hoping that the Stadion Letzigrund can lead them to victory over a Young Boys side fresh off of their first loss of the season.
Young Boys have only lost one of their last eight away games and have been so dominant in this fixture recently which is making us back the champions in this match. They have already beaten Zürich 4-0 this season and, besides last game’s blip, have been unstoppable in the league. Young boys are a great side but with their defensive woes being so prominent, only one clean sheet in their last seven, we doubt it will be as easy for this time round. We’re going to back a 2-1 win for the champions as they are still 11 points clear at the top of the table but with them losing in their last game and Zürich being so good recently, it should be a tight match.
