France look for positive start to Euros tilt

France enter the Women’s Euros rivalling England and Spain among the favourites in the betting after falling in the quarter-finals of each of the least three editions, and a positive result against Italy, second favourites to come through Group D, is essential if Les Blues – who enter the tournament in terrific form, are to top the standings.

Corrine Diacre’s team have won 14 consecutive games since a friendly loss to world champions the United States last April, beating heavy-hitters Germany, Brazil and the Netherlands in that time. All but two of those wins saw France score twice, but as the saying goes, defences win titles, and they’ve recorded 10 shutout wins in that sequence, while a rearguard featuring Lyon’s European champions Griedge Mbock Bathy and Selma Bacha will be difficult to break down.

Italy are also touted to reach the knockout phases after a good run of their own, going unbeaten through their last seven games but failing to beat either of the top-10 ranked sides they played in that time. Minela Bertolini’s team have only scored multiple goals in one of their six 2022 outings, and though they will be competitive, may struggle to hurt Les Blues.

Blues set for clean sheet

Opening tournament games are often cagey, and considering France’s terrific defensive record and recent wins over elite-level opposition, we’re tipping them to win to nil against an Italy side who have not beaten them in three prior meetings.
