Frankfurt vs Wolfsburg Predictions

After eight years in the 2. Bundesliga, FSV Frankfurt will be disappointed to take one step back in their relegation to the German 3. Liga by finishing second from bottom last season. The 3. Liga is already well underway and with four fixtures already played, things are not looking too promising. FSV Frankfurt have taken just two points from their opening four matches, drawing two and losing two, and they sit third from bottom, one point behind Werder Bremen II and safety. While the hosts have a difficult challenge ahead, coach Roland Vrabec has summarised the draw well by saying: “The charm of the DFB Pokal is that it’s a knockout competition. We are clearly the underdogs but nevertheless we have already played four competitive matches this season, whereas this is the first for Wolfsburg. Our goal is to catch them by surprise.”

Dieter Hecking’s Wolfsburg really struggled in the Bundesliga last season. The departure of superstar Kevin De Bruyne was clearly a game-changer as the 2014/2015 runners up finished 8th last time out, missing out on European competition entirely for the coming campaign. Wolfsburg’s poor finish has seen some bigger name players already depart this summer, such as the transfer of winger Andre Schurrle to Borussia Dortmund and Brazilian defender Naldo to Schalke 04, and many more are in the cross-hairs of other top sides. Though German striker Mario Gomez signed for the visitors a few days back from Italian side Fiorentina, he will remain ineligible for this fixture.

FSV Frankfurt haven’t been knocked out of the DFB Pokal first round stage since 2009, but they haven’t had a fixture as difficult as this in the first round since 2009 either. Frankfurt were knocked out with a 2-1 defeat to Borussia M’gladbach the last time this scenario occurred and we expect a similar outcome here. Wolfsburg haven’t been too impressive in their preseason against decent teams, such as Celtic, Basel, and Benfica, but are obviously the better side in this match-up. While FSV Frankfurt are clearly not on the same level, they should come out firing given coach Vrabec’s fighting talk. Considering that FSV Frankfurt have scored at least one goal in six of their last seven matches and both teams have scored in all three of Wolfsburg’s last three DFB Pokal matches, including a similar scenario where they won 4-1 over fourth tier side Stuttgarter Kickers, we like to take our tip in this direction.

Wolfburg are the favourites and the market for them to win at full time isn’t amazing value. We find much better value in the visitors to win in a match where the hosts,FSV Frankfurt, will take themselves away a consolation goal. As such, Wolfsburg to win and both teams to score at 8/5 and Wolfsburg to win 3-1 at 10/1 are our top choice bets for this match.
