Germany vs England Predictions

England’s progress into the finals was extremely comfortable with 10 wins out of 10 during a qualifying group in which they were never seriously tested. Understandable then that Roy Hodgson’s men have arranged friendlies against some of the best teams in Europe as they build up to the Euros. November friendlies with France and Spain resulted in 1 win and 1 defeat and games this week against Germany and the Netherlands will again seriously test the credentials of this youthful England side.

Germany’s qualification didn’t come without the odd hiccup. They suffered defeats in Warsaw and Dublin and have also suffered 3 friendly defeats against Argentina, USA and France since winning the 2014 World Cup. Therefore the Germans certainly have something to prove ahead of the European Championships. They’ve only won 1 of their 5 friendlies since the World Cup, with Australia also picking up a draw against them so there is certainly hope for England here.

Although international friendlies can often be drab affairs, matches between England and Germany always involve a bit of extra spice and this could be a lively contest. Germany are yet to keep a clean sheet in 5 matches this season and haven’t shut a team out since they faced minnows Gibraltar last June. They have conceded at least once in 9 of their last 10 home internationals with again Gibraltar the only team to fail to score a goal during a visit to Germany in that period so clearly there are defensive frailties which England can exploit.

Despite the absence of Wayne Rooney, England’s strength still looks to be in attack with Harry Kane and Jamie Vardy enjoying prolific seasons in the Premier League while Daniel Sturridge, arguably their best finisher, is also in the squad. The likes of Ross Barkley and Dele Alli also offer a genuine goal threat from midfield so an away goal is likely but it’s hard to see England keeping a clean sheet, something they’ve only managed in 2 of their last 14 away friendlies.

Despite some poor results Germany have scored at least once in all of their last 10 home internationals and they’ve netted twice or more in 8 of those games and like England are stronger going forward than at the back. Therefore there is plenty of reason to back both teams to score at 10/11.
