Hannover 96 vs Borussia Monchengladbach Predictions

Borussia Monchengladbach were second in the Bundesliga at the start of February, but a run of just one win in eight matches since (W1 D3 L4) has extinguished their unlikely title hopes. Such a disappointing dip in results has led Gladbach to announce that coach Dieter Hecking will not continue to manage the club after this season. It’s no coincidence either that their drop in form has also been linked with a goal drought from Thorgan Hazard, who hasn’t scored in 2019 after bagging nine in the first half of the season. He’s another who plans to leave the club this summer.

Hannover’s managerial change came much sooner, but it hasn’t given them much more luck. So many things have gone against them in recent weeks – poor weather conditions (heavy snow) denying them a goal in a game against Leverkusen a few weeks back is a highlight – and now coach Thomas Doll has as many as seven key players in the treatment room unavailable going into the weekend. To make matters worse, frustrated home fans only add pressure to their unlikely survival ambitions. Things look very bleak ahead of a game they desperately need to win.

It’s no surprise, therefore, that Gladbach are favourites here, but we feel the value for this game is in goals – or a lack thereof. Even though no team has conceded more goals than Hannover 96 in 2019 so far – 30 goals, an average of 2.7 goals per game conceded – in their current form, Gladbach don’t look like a side capable of exploiting that. Hecking’s men have scored just eleven goals in eleven Bundesliga games since the turn of the year – only three sides, one of which is Hannover, have scored fewer – and, notably, under 2.5 goals were scored in four of their last five away days too (W3 D1 L1).

What’s more interesting is that Gladbach have actually been performing defensively sound against some of the weaker sides in the division over that spell – Die Fohlen have kept a clean sheet in 36% of away matches. Facing a Hannover side that have failed to score in 57% of their home matches and are without star man Nicolas Fullkrug – the third top scorer in the Bundesliga last season – is, therefore, a perfect opportunity for them to improve on such a trend. However, with Gladbach not in particularly convincing attacking form, we don’t see them taking it by much. Our prediction: 1-0 Gladbach.
