Hungary vs Wales Predictions

Ryan Giggs will want to emulate Chris Coleman’s success at the European Championships, but first, he has to get there. The Welsh took a hit in their last game, losing against Croatia to fall to fourth place. This is a tricky group for Giggs given that four sides who made the last 16 at Euro 2016 are all battling for two spots at the finals this time around. That puts pressure onto the Welsh, especially as they face a very tricky visit to a Hungary side who currently top the group going into this game.

The hosts were able to make a flying start to the Euros three years ago, which saw them cause problems for Austria and Portugal. However, can they return to the tournament next year? The hosts have made some decent early strides towards it, but we expect to see a tight group which is likely going to see plenty of teams taking points off one another. This could end up being the closest pool, with potentially some of the lowest qualifying points totals at the Euros next summer.

Wales won’t care how they get there, they just want to make up for missing out on the 2018 World Cup. They couldn’t even make the playoffs for Russia, as Coleman’s reign came to a disappointing end. Now the Welsh need a shot in the arm for their 2020 campaign, as they’ve hardly been inspiring in recent months. Their 2019 results have seen them claim 1-0 home wins over Trinidad and Tobago and Slovakia. That was followed by a 2-1 loss at Croatia at the weekend, which has left the visitors second-bottom.

The worry for the visitors is that they come into this game with poor form behind them. With five defeats in their last eight matches, Giggs is yet to get the most out of this Welsh team. They come into this clash with one victory in their last five away trips, while they’ve lost three of the last four. Their one victory in that time was a narrow 1-0 success against a Republic of Ireland side who may as well not have turned up, so it was hardly much to shout about.

Meanwhile, Hungary look impressive. They come into this clash after four wins in five matches, while they won 3-1 at Azerbaijan at the weekend. Hungary have already beaten Croatia at home in this group, while so far clashes between the main contenders have been won by the home side. In fact, Hungary’s win in Baku was the first away win in this group after six games. With Hungary winning their last four on the spin at home, we’re backing them for a result on Tuesday.
