      Tip Reasoning

The Maltese are often casually and quite unfairly branded alongside the likes of San Marino and Andorra as one of the real minnows of European international football. However in reality they are a considerably tougher nut to crack than those sides and frequently give much bigger countries a scare.

They don’t score many goals but have only conceded 10 times in 6 matches in what is a tough Group H so far. Their away performances have been particularly impressive. They picked up a point in Bulgaria and were only beaten 2-0 away to group leaders Croatia.

Italy obviously should win the game but are ridiculously short to do so at 1/40. They haven’t won a game by more than 2 goals since a 4-0 win against San Marino over 2 years ago and even that wasn’t really a big win considering the opposition. Italian teams are well known for getting the job done but very rarely win by a cricket score so you have to fancy Malta to at least restrict them to a 2 goal win here at 13/10.

Some of Italy’s recent results against sides they should have been beating comfortably make for interesting reading. Since the start of 2013 they have drawn with the likes of Haiti, Luxembourg and Armenia and it is almost 10 months since they won a game which was a narrow 1-0 home win against Albania.

They have played Malta 3 times in competitive fixtures in the past 3 years given the sides were in the same group for World Cup 2014 qualifying. Italy won both World Cup qualifiers 2-0 and were 1-0 winners in Malta earlier in this campaign, so they have been far from convincing victors when you consider the enormous gulf in class.

This is still an Italy side in transition and therefore a relatively narrow home win to nil is likely again and you can back them to secure another 2-0 success at 15/4.
