Grêmio find themselves 2^nd in the group, though they still have a lot to do in order to qualify for the knockout stages as they are only 2 points ahead of 3^rd and 4^th position. The two time winners of the cup started this campaign poorly as they lost 2-0 away to Toluca, despite the home side playing with 10 men since the 36^th minute. They recovered from this bad start however, beating LDU Quito 4-0 at home before facing San Lorenzo home and away, drawing both of these fixtures 1-1.

Grêmio are in great form coming into this fixture, unbeaten in their last 6,  it was an easy win the last time these teams met, and they will hope to replicate this again in this fixture and get one step closer to qualification.
