Lille vs Nancy Predictions

Lille have had an absolute shocker so far this season. They managed to push on last season to claim a Europa League qualification spot in Ligue 1, significantly improving on their 8th place finish from the season before.

Their success was largely based on their impenetrable defence, with them holding the second best defensive record in the league behind PSG. They conceded just 27 goals, with the 3rd best defensive side Saint Etienne shipping 37.

This season their defence has completely crumbled though. They opened the campaign with a knockout blow from Qabala to halt their Europa League dreams, and what has followed has been even worse. Their 3-1 loss at Saint Etienne last weekend made it five defeats, one win, and one draw from their seven Ligue 1 games this season.

In these seven games, which account for 18% of their total league games, they have conceded 14 goals. This is over half of their total from last season and puts them as the joint worst defensive side in the table at the moment. The defeat to Saint Etienne also made it four losses in a row for them and leaves them bottom of Ligue 1.

Nancy aren’t doing overly well either, but then again as a newly promoted team they weren’t expected to do much. They opened the season with three straight victories as they conceded seven goals and scored none. They finally got off the mark with a 2-0 win over Lorient, but since then they have drawn with Nantes and Bastia and, most recently, lost to Nice.

This leaves Nancy second from bottom in the table, so whoever loses this match will go into the international break sitting rock bottom of Ligue 1.

Nancy have actually done pretty well away from home so far this season. Their only win of the season came away to Lorient and last time out they drew with Bastia. Lille, on the other hand, have lost their last two home games and have only won one of their four games at home in all competitions this season. This, plus Lille’s overall horrendous form, makes odds of 10/11 for a Nancy Win or Draw Double Chance look a good bet, so I’m backing that along with a 1-1 correct score prediction at 5/1.
