A successful Supporters Shield defence continues here

Los Angeles FC got their defence of their Supporters Shield off to a great start last weekend, beating MLS’ newest club, Inter Miami, by one goal to nil. They were stopped from increasing that lead by a great performance from the Inter Miami defence and goalkeeper but still created 21 chances and had nine shots on target. It was a performance reminiscent of their success last season.

There’s not been a great deal of movement in the LAFC squad in the off-season but there wasn’t much need to change a superb side. Carlos Vela picked up where he left off last season with an incredible chipped goal last weekend; the ability of the players around him to create space for the Mexican could spell trouble for Philadelphia this weekend.

A poor start but can Philadelphia bounce back?

Philadelphia Union were the surprise package of the Eastern Conference last season, qualifying for the play-offs with ease and impressing with a string of impressive results. They weren’t able to continue that into the 2020 season, however, with a rather lacklustre 2-0 defeat to Dallas leaving the side bottom of the east after the opening weekend.

Philadelphia adopted a narrow 4-1-2-1-2 formation last weekend that relied on width from the full backs; but this often left them exposed in wide positions defensively and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see them change their style slightly heading into this game with LAFC.

LAFC lock for another win

LAFC looked in great form last weekend and that’s something we think will carry forward this week too. With a bit more luck in front of goal, they should pick up a more comprehensive victory against a Philadelphia side that looked a little flat last weekend. We’re backing LAFC to win the game and there to be over 2.5 match goals.

LAFC might not have it all their own way this weekend, however, and we can see Philadelphia getting on the scoresheet. But the hosts should have too much for their rivals and we’re predicting a 3-1 win for LAFC this weekend.
