Manchester City vs Paris Saint Germain Predictions
Not many people were expecting Manchester City to come away from the Parc des Princes with anything last week, but the quarter final debutants went a goal ahead through Kevin De Bruyne, a figure who has been sorely missed during his injury. Paris Saint Germain came back at the visitors though and put them 2-1 up through Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Adrien Rabiot. A 2-1 defeat wouldn’t have been the end of the world for Manchester City, but Fernandinho had other ideas as he notched the equaliser 20 minutes from time.
Manchester City followed this up with a 2-1 win against West Brom on Saturday, but they know that their Premier League title challenge is all but over. They are just playing for a top four spot at the moment.
Their main focus will undoubtedly be the Champions League, but the job is far from done yet. Paris Saint Germain bounced back from this disappointing first leg result with a 2-0 win at Guingamp, but the main story will be the resting of key figures in the squad. There was no Ibrahimovic, Angel Di Maria, or Thiago Silva as Laurent Blanc looks to rest his star players in preparation for Tuesday’s match.
The problem with a draw is that Manchester City will still need to go on the attack on Tuesday. They can’t expect to keep Paris Saint Germain from scoring for the 90 minutes to qualify on away goals. The hosts have conceded in 18 of their last 22 home matches in all competitions, so keeping a side who have scored 97 goals in Ligue 1 and the Champions League this season will surely be a step too far, especially if they are without Vincent Kompany.
The necessity for attacking will lead to more openings for Paris Saint Germain, and the only way that Man City can turn to defence is if they get the first goal.
Either way, I don’t expect Manchester City’s defence to fair particularly well on Tuesday. Paris Saint Germain have scored at least two goals in six of their last seven away matches and in eight of their last 11 matches overall. Manchester City, meanwhile, have been unable to cope defensively against the top sides, with both Leicester and Spurs notching at least two against them recently.
This, plus the fact that PSG will need to go for it, makes odds of 10/11 for Paris Saint Germain Over 1.5 Team Goals look excellent value. I’m backing a 2-1 Paris Saint Germain win at 17/2 as well.
