Mexico vs El Salvador Predictions
The Mexicans won the CONCACAF Gold Cup this summer but did so in fairly unconvincing fashion. At times they were awful defensively while in other games they were poor going forward but they stuttered and stumbled into the final where they were slightly more convincing in their 3-1 win over Jamaica.
They’ll be hoping for a smoother ride in World Cup qualifying this time around after needing an inter-continental play-off win against New Zealand to make it to Brazil and they very nearly were eliminated prior to that. Since the summer they’ve been in good form securing a place in the Confederations Cup in 2017 by beating USA and drawing friendlies against Trinidad & Tobago and Argentina. All of those games had 4 or more goals in them and they have been involved in plenty of high-scoring contests of late.
Opponents El Salvador are not a great side if truth be told and could only manage a 2-0 aggregate win against tiny Curaçao in the last round. They did though pick up a couple of draws at the Gold Cup and held Costa Rica to a 1-1 scoreline so they aren’t going to roll over and die here but in reality there should only be one winner and odds of 1/7 for a Mexico win reflect that.
The real value here might be going for Mexico to win and both teams to score at a huge 3/1. Mexico have kept just two clean sheets in their last 8 games and have conceded 13 times in those matches. They should certainly score 2 or more themselves but you can never feel confident backing them to keep things tight at the other end and an away goal can’t be ruled out.
It would be a huge shock if El Salvador scored more than once but they have scored in 3 of their last 4 World Cup matches against Mexico so consider backing the hosts to win 3-1 at 14/1.
