Montevideo Wanderers vs The Strongest Predictions
Montevideo Wanderers managed to make it back into the Copa Libertadores after missing out last season, and all Uruguayan eyes will be on them as they look to replicate their journey to the last 16 in 2015.
They have started off well with a thrilling 7-5 aggregate win over Club Universitario in the Copa Libertadores First Round, but there is an awful long way to go yet before they can replicate that success of a couple of years ago.
The hosts made it through to the tournament thanks to a late surge in form last season, and they come into this match having won seven, drawn two, and lost just one of their last ten games in all competitions. At home they have won six and drawn one of their last seven, with the last three of those games having a total of 17 goals in them.
The Strongest are fairly regular occupants of this round of the Copa Libertadores due to their domestic success in Bolivia. They won the league again last season thanks to a goal difference victory over Jorge Wilstermann, and last season they managed to make it to the group stages of the Copa Libertadores before finishing 3rd and going home.
This was a replication of their performance the season before, but it was only back in 2014 that The Strongest made it to the last 16 of the competition. However, their record away from home in the Copa Libertadores is terrible. They have lost 23 of their 26 trips away and won just once, failing to score in 16 of those games.
In fairness the majority of their failures in front of goal came over ten years ago, but whilst their recent away record has improved they are still there for the taking when they visit other top South American teams.
This tips the scale in Montevideo Wanderers’ direction, and I’m also expecting some goals here. The hosts have seen at least three goals in five of their last seven games and their last Copa Libertadores round ended with 12 goals over two legs. The Strongest have seen Over 2.5 Goals in four of their last six away days in Copa Libertadores and in six of their last nine in all competitions. This makes odds of 8/5 for a Montevideo Wanderers Win and Over 2.5 Goals look a good option, so I’m backing that along with a 3-1 correct score predictions at 12/1.
