Nacional vs Palmeiras Predictions
Uruguayan Nacional will be hopeful to get some further points in this game to strengthen their current 1st place position. Having previously drawn in Argentina 0-0 against Rosario Central on the opening day, before a goal-less draw against fellow Argentinian outfit River Plate at home in their last game, they went to beat Palmeiras away from home 2-1 to give themselves a 1 point lead at the top of Group 2, and continue their unbeaten run in this years competition.
All 3 goals in Nacional’s 2-1 win came in the first half, with Nicolas Lopez and Leandro Barcia both scoring late on in the half to give Nacional a 2-1 lead. However in first half stoppage time Jorge Fucile was sent off for a second yellow card, the challenge gave away a penalty which Gabriel Jesus cooly slotted. The second half was very balanced with opportunities for both sides, controversy struck again at the end of the half when Leo Gamalho was sent off in the 93rd minute, just 5 minutes after coming on to replace goal scorer Nicolas Lopez.
Palmeiras made a good start to their Copa Libertadores campaign after a 3 year absence from the competition. Having gained a respectable point drawing 2-2 away from home against River Plate, before going on to win 2-0 against Rosario Central in Brazil. They will be disappointed not to have capitalised against Nacional’s 10 men in the 2-1 loss, but have a great opportunity going into this return fixture.
The Copa Libertadores points are vital for progression at this stage, but with Nacional’s squad being depleted defensively due to injuries and suspensions they’ll not be able to put out a full squad, something Palmeiras will look to capitalise on, and set the record straight after the 2-1 defeat last week.
