Northampton vs Cheltenham Predictions

  • Cheltenham lost just six of their 36 games in the regular season, no side suffered fewer league defeats
  • Northampton won only one of their five games against playoff opponents, picking up only one point in two meetings with Cheltenham
  • Only two of Cheltenham’s 18 away games featured three or more goals

Long layoff a concern for Northampton

The playoffs are difficult to assess at the best of times but with no side having played a competitive match for three months and the season finished with 37 games contested instead of the usual 46, punters are advised to tread extremely carefully.

However, there are a few factors that should be considered, such as results against fellow playoff rivals, particularly fixtures played during this calendar year, and form from the start of the season which can determine whether teams are ready to go after a break.

Northampton were as low as 19th in the table after five outings, enduring three defeats in that time, and they boast a poor record against their playoff rivals with only one win from five attempts.

Keith Curle’s Cobblers picked up just point from two meetings with against Cheltenham, drawing 1-1 with the Robins at Sixfields in December before suffering a 2-1 defeat in February’s reverse fixture in Gloucestershire.

Northampton lost three of their final four home games before the three-month hiatus and Curle’s decision to turn down any friendly opportunities may see them rustier than their opponents.

The Cobblers are also weakened in attack due to the suspension of Sam Hoskins, who is their leading scorer this season with ten goals, and we are predicting them to struggle this evening.

Cheltenham look the team to beat

Cheltenham lost just six of their 36 games in the regular season, no side suffered fewer league defeats, and they should be full of confidence ahead of their trip to Northampton.

The Robins picked up four points from two meetings with Northampton and they have suffered just four defeats in 30 league games since August, losing only twice in 15 attempts on their travels.

Michael Duff’s men have shown they are extremely difficult to beat and they made a faster start to the season than that of Northampton, claiming eight points from their opening five games.

The Robins won five matches in the space of 18 days in February, so are proven with the quick turnaround, and they look the team they all have to beat in the battle for promotion.

A low-scoring contest could be in store

Given the obvious lack of match fitness in both camps, it could be unruly to expect an enterprising playoff encounter.

Only two of Cheltenham’s 18 away games featured three or more goals, while both teams scored in only four of Northampton’s final 14 games on home soil.

The Robins kept clean sheets in eight of their 18 away trips and may deliver another determined defensive display against a direct Northampton side who are missing top scorer Hoskins.

Northampton lost 1-0 in two of their final four home games against Port Vale and champions Swindon and we’re going for an identical outcome for our correct score prediction.
