Panathinaikos vs Brondby Predictions
Panathinaikos’ 3rd placed finish in the Greek Superleague, after playoffs, was as consistent as ever. The Greek side entered the Europa League one stage earlier than in their 2015/2016 season, but will be looking to progress further than their playoff knockout this time around. Panathinaikos domintated Swedish side AIK over two legs in the third qualifying round, winning 3-0 on aggregate. Loanee Victor Ibarbo took away his first goal for the club in the second leg and all but sealed their progress. The Greek Superleague is yet to begin and, with Panathinaikos in decent competitive form all their focus will be on taking away a strong advantage on their home soil.
Danish side Brondby from Copenhagen are no strangers to European competition either. Their 4th placed finish in the Danish Superliga last season secured them entry to the Europa League first qualifying round, their third consecutive year in the competition. Brondby have been in top form, progressing through to the third qualifying round by aggregate wins of 10-1 over Icelandic side Valur and 2-0 over Scottish side Hibernian in the earlier stages. Brondby’s biggest challenge, however, awaited them in their third qualifying round clash against Hertha Berlin of the Bundesliga. Brondby found themselves 1-0 behind after the first leg, but fought hard at home in the second leg with Finnish striker Teemu Pukki able to take all the credit for his hat-trick in their 3-1 win.
Panathinaikos are the bookies’ favourites for this tie and while we also fancy them to progress, the odds are too short for us to see decent value. Admittedly, this is not without reason. The Greeks are unbeaten at home in fourteen consecutive matches (nine competitive and five club friendlies), winning thirteen and drawing just three. Instead, let’s focus on what both sides have been doing to find the value here – scoring goals. Brondby have shown a lot of heart so far in the competition and have scored at least one goal in four of their last five away matches. Panathinaikos, on the other hand, have averaged about three goals per game over their last five competitive home matches.
While we expect Panathinaikos to dominate here, we see decent value in Brondby taking away at least a consolation goal. As such, both teams to score at 11/8 and Panathinaikos to win 3-1 at 16/1 are our choice bets for this match.
