Philadelphia Union vs DC United Predictions

The MLS Eastern Conference isn’t meeting expectations so far this season, with all the teams involved performing worse in terms of points per game average than the majority of the Western Conference. Top of the table Montreal Impact have only managed 1.45 points per game, whilst Philadelphia Union have the best average of 1.5 points per game.

This is still worse than the top six in the Western Conference, and it’s no surprise looking at the statistically best team in the conference. Philadelphia Union have only won two of their last seven games in the MLS, losing twice and drawing three games.

These three draws have all come in the last three games as San Jose Earthquakes and LA Galaxy holding them at home before an away draw with Montreal Impact on Saturday. This leaves them in 3rd position in the Eastern Conference, one point off the top two positions and with a game in hand on both of them. A win on Friday night would put the pressure on Montreal Impact to take back the top spot.

DC United occupy 5th position in the table with a two point deficit on their opponents, and they have played a game more than them. A win by three goals on Friday would see them move to the top of the table.

The visitors have been very inconsistent recently, but that’s better than they were managing before. They began the season with a five match winless streak where they dropped 12 points. Since then they have won three, lost two, and drawn one of their six matches, which is an improvement but it’s still frustrating to see such an up and down team.

Away from home DC United remain winless having lost one and drawn three of their away days in the MLS this season. In fact, they are winless away from home since a CONCACAF Champions League match last August. Philadelphia Union are unbeaten on home turf this season and have won three of their five games.

The hosts have conceded in eight of their ten MLS games this season though, whilst DC United have only failed to score in one of their four away games this season. They have conceded in all but one as well though, and Philadelphia Union have found the back of the net in all of their home games this term.

This makes odds of 3/4 for Both Teams to Score look attractive, but I’m also backing a Philadelphia Union victory with a 2-1 correct score prediction at 15/2.
