      Plymouth Argyle vs Oldham Predictions

After failing to challenge for the top six seriously enough last term, Oldham would’ve been looking for improvement this time around, though they’ve not made a very good start to the new campaign. However, this weekend they have the opportunity to prove that they belong in the promotion hunt as they face off against one of the other contenders, Plymouth Argyle.

Plymouth were flying after their first five games as the Pilgrims, who are desperate to return to League One at the first time of asking, won three, drew one and lost one of their first five games. However, last time out Ryan Lowe’s men were on the back of a disappointing defeat at the hands of Northampton Town and that result means that they currently sit four points off top spot in the early season league table.

Part of Plymouth’s strong start has come thanks to their ability to find the net on a regular basis and they have scored 10 times in their opening six matches. However, with the side conceding five times in their last three league games, there is a concern that they are leaving themselves open at the back.

Overall, it’s been a poor first five match-days for Oldham, who’ve struggled at both ends of the pitch. In the defensive third, Latics haven’t provided enough resistance, which is why they’ve surrendered eight goals in six games, a record which is well into the lower half of the league in terms of goals conceded.

However, while they’ve not been great at the back, it’s a lack of attacking strength that is really holding Oldham back. Laurent Banide’s men have scored just three goals in six matches, four of which they’ve drawn a blank in.

This fixture has typically brought plenty of entertainment over the years and the last six meetings between these two sides have seen an average of 4.17 goals scored per game. The hosts are well adept in finding the back of the net and they are coming up against a side who have struggled to keep their opposition at bay, so backing there to be over 2.5 goals scored looks to represent the best opportunity for a return.

In terms of a correct score tip, we think the hosts should win this one with something to spare and racking up a few goals seems quite likely. Although their visitors are poor in front of goal, we think Plymouth’s recent lapses at the back may open the door for Oldham to grab a consolation, so backing a 3-1 home win is our tip.
