Qabala vs Saint Etienne Predictions & Betting Tips, Match Previews

Qabala are predictably finding it tough in their Europa League group, and the 1-0 defeat at Saint Etienne a few weeks ago made it three defeats from their three group games to leave them almost out of touch with the qualification spots. If they lose again on Thursday they would officially be out of the tournament, as the three teams above them are all tied on five points apiece.

Domestically they have had a fairly good start to the season and find themselves top of the Azerbaijan Premiyer Liqa table, but they only have a two point lead over Qarabag and have suffered a dip in form of late. Their 4-1 win over Neftci on Saturday made it two wins, two draws, and two defeats in their last six matches in all competitions. Both of these defeats did come in the Europa League, but it’s always a surprise when Qabala drop points domestically.

Qabala’s star player so far this season is undoubtedly French forward Bagaliy Dabo, who has netted ten times in all competitions, including three in the Europa League.  Liberian midfielder Theo Weeks is a close second though, with five of his seven goals coming in the Europa League. However, I wouldn’t expect any of them to have much luck against Saint Etienne.

The visitors style of play is clear for all to see this season. They have focused heavily on building a solid back line, and as a result their play at the other end of the pitch has suffered a bit. They have only scored six goals in their last six games in all competitions, conceding five at the other end.

This has resulted in a recent record of two wins, three draws, and one defeat in all competitions. Also, every one of these matches has seen fewer than three goals scored. In fact, just one of their last 13 outings in all competitions has seen more than three goals, with all three of their Europa League group games being low scoring affairs as well.

With Saint Etienne being away from home on Thursday I’m expecting more of the same. Qabala will struggle to break them down and Saint Etienne will just be looking to nick a goal and hold onto their lead. Odds of 4/6 for Under 2.5 Goals seem fair to me, and that’s what I’m going for along with a 1-0 win for Saint Etienne at 5/1.
