Real Madrid can go top of La Liga on Saturday afternoon for a few hours at least with a win here. They come into this game after a crushing 5-1 win at Getafe in another local derby last weekend and the ease with which they disposed of a good Villarreal side in midweek was perhaps even more impressive. They are still relying on the top two both slipping up at some point between now and the end of the season if they are to have a chance of winning the league though. Los Blancos have the toughest run-in as well so the odds are still against them but they ought to have too much for a Rayo Vallecano side who they scored 10 goals against earlier in the campaign.

With results like that, it is no surprise that Rayo have the worst defensive record in the division but they are in reasonably good form. They conceded late on at Malaga on Wednesday when they seemed destined for a huge away win but have still lost just one of their last 6 games although with another derby against Atleti next weekend and only 3 points separating them and the bottom 3 they are still in grave danger.

Their record against the top sides since their promotion to the top flight is atrocious and Paco Jemez’s insistance on attacking football has regularly left them on the end of heavy defeats. Given Rayo’s defensive record and what happened last time the clubs met, Real Madrid should get plenty of chances here and score enough goals to win the game but Rayo have only failed to score in 1 of their last 15 matches and they have netted 5 goals in their 3 games against Real and Barca this term. The problem being they’ve also conceded a frankly ridiculous 20 goals in those matches.

Therefore there is plenty of reason to back Real Madrid to win and both teams to score at 11/10.
