Red Star Belgrade vs Tottenham Hotspur Predictions
Tottenham Hotspur will be out to put their domestic woes and troubles behind them when they take on the powerhouses of Serbian football Red Star Belgrade in a crucial Champions League Group B encounter this week.
Remarkably, Spurs’ only victory in their last six matches in all competitions was in the reverse fixture against the Serbians on October 22nd in London.
Tottenham’s last away win was also in the Champions League, though we have to go all the way back to their semi final triumph over Ajax in last season’s competition in May to find it.
In total, Tottenham’s dismal away game record for 2019 so far reads just five wins from 22 competitive matches, though Mauricio Pochettino will be confident that his charges can add another win to that sequence this week against a Red Star Belgrade team that they conquered so easily a fortnight ago.
Red Star were beaten comfortably in two of their first three Group B matches since August, though their 3-1 win over Olympiakos on match day two shone a light on just how much more dangerous they are on their own patch.
In last season’s tournament group stage, Red Star held Napoli and beat eventual winners Liverpool in Belgrade, and the Serbians very rarely fail to score in the Champions League when playing in front of their own supporters.
Since 2000, Red Star scored at least once in 21 of their 25 UCL qualification and group games, and we expect them to register on Wednesday against a Tottenham side that have struggled for clean sheets all season long.
More recently, the Red-Whites hit the net in all but one of their last 33 matches in all competitions, and Red Star scored an average of three goals per 90 minutes across their last four games at the Rajko Mitić Stadium.
Spurs kept Red Star out when the teams faced off in London, though that was one of only two Tottenham blanks the team secured in their last ten matches, with the other achieved against lower league Colchester United in the Carabao Cup.
Despite their porous performances at the back, Spurs have managed to retain a decent goal-scoring threat at the other end, and as a result, a large chunk of their matches finish with both teams scoring.
In total, goals went in at either end in 10 of Spurs’ 15 competitive fixtures since early August, and the statistics tell us that we should expect both teams to score again in Belgrade this week. We also expect Tottenham’s superior quality to ultimately shine through by full-time however.
Spurs hold a sizeable psychological edge over Red Star having battered them 5-0 just two weeks ago, and in our correct score prediction were tipping them to make the most of that advantage by forcing a 2-1 win.
