RKC vs Ajax Reserves Predictions

After five wins from their last seven, RKC are well and truly on the move in Eerste Divisie. Fred Grim’s charges are now up to 12th and just three points behind the Play-off places heading into match day 21, where they’ll entertain defending champions Jong Ajax at Mandemakers Stadion. Michael Reiziger’s side have been on an equally strong run of late though, and will go into the match as favourites to follow up their 2-1 success in Amsterdam when the teams last met in October.

RKC finished 2018 really strongly under the guidance of Fred Grim with four victories recorded in six games prior to the festive break, and the Waalwijk outfit returned in equally good nick last weekend to defeat promotion hopefuls Oss 1-2 on the road, despite going a goal down midway through the second half.

A penalty from Emil Hansson and a late strike from Dylan Seys secured a much deserved success for Grim’s charges at Frans Heesen Stadion, and the realistic aim for RKC must now be the Play-offs with just three points separating them from 9th placed Cambuur.

A win here over Jong Ajax and three points in next week’s clash away to Jong Utrecht could well see RKC leap into the top nine, although they’ll have to step up once again this Friday if they’re to overcome the defending champions, who’ve shown throughout the past few weeks the kind form which lead them to the Eerste Divisie title last term.

Jong won four on the bounce going into Christmas including tremendous victories over promotion chasers Twente (2-5) and Sparta Rotterdam (2-0), and they returned last week to fight out a thrilling 2-2 draw with main rivals Jong PSV at Sportpark De Toekomst.

Reiziger’s side obviously didn’t collect the three points they gunned for to land a fifth consecutive win, but there was no drop off in terms of performance as visitors Jong PSV played extremely well to earn a draw. The point means Jong Ajax remain 8th in the table ahead of this week’s trip to Waalwijk, but could climb as high as 5th on match day 21 depending on how other results go.

RKC will look to Jong’s poor overall away record this season (W3, D1, L6) and will feel they have a realistic chance of gaining revenge for the 2- 1 defeat suffered in October’s reverse fixture, but bare stats can be a little deceiving sometimes, as Jong appear to have cured their travel sickness with back to back triumphs on the road.

Jong ran out 2-4 in last season’s corresponding fixture, and it’s unlikely that they’ll be too phased by RKC’s resurgence, considering Oss are the only top half team that the hosts have beaten on their recent run.

So we’re favouring the visitors here, as we think they have the quality to stop RKC in their tracks. Jong are well-priced for the contest despite being favourites, so we’re playing with a straight bat in backing them to win the match, with 1-2 our correct score prediction.
