Rotherham vs Newcastle Predictions

According to the bookies, Rotherham are the side most likely to finish bottom this season and Newcastle remain the title favourites so it’s fair to say there is a real gulf in class here and a Magpies win looks to be on the cards.

Newcastle were involved in a real thriller on Wednesday night against fellow promotion hopefuls Norwich. Despite an early goal from Dwight Gayle, the Canaries took control of the game and were leading 3-1 with 20 minutes to play. However, the Magpies came roaring back with dramatic 95th and 96th minute goals to win the game 4-3. A hat-trick for Dwight Gayle will have done his confidence the world of good and it was an important win as defeat would have seen Newcastle fall 7 points back on Norwich.

There are still question-marks about Newcastle defensively but going forward they are creating loads of chances and they are now the top scorers in the division, with 21 goals in 10 games. Against a suspect Rotherham defence, they really could put the Millers to the sword here.

Rotherham are bottom of the table with just 6 points from 10 games and Alan Stubbs might just be starting to feel the heat following his summer move from Hibs. Defensively they have been very poor, conceding 24 goals so far this term in the league, more than any other team. The one glimmer of hope for them here is that they are significantly better at home than away, but a 2-1 defeat against struggling Cardiff last weekend at the New York Stadium would have been a real confidence blow and they suffered a 3rd straight defeat at Huddersfield in midweek.

With the league’s best attack taking on the division’s worst defence, a convincing away win looks likely here. Rotherham have conceded twice or more in all but one of their competitive fixtures this season but both teams have scored in all of their last 5 so they could well nick a goal too. It’s the other end where they will come under tremendous pressure though and backing Newcastle to Win & Over 2.5 Goals at 11/8 looks to offer great value.
