Saint Etienne
    Milsami

      Tip Reasoning

Saint Etienne grabbed their first victory of the Ligue 1 season when they stole a 1-0 victory over Lorient this weekend. It hadn’t been the most impressive season up to that point for a side that finished in Ligue 1’s top five in 2014-15. They lost to Toulouse on the opening weekend, were denied by Bordeaux one week later at home and failed to gain a victory against Milsami in the first leg.

Most frustrating for ASSE in the first leg would have been their inability to translate long periods of possession into quality chances, or actually any sort of shot on goal. Despite carrying more than 60% of the possession, St. Etienne finished up with just four shots on target and even their total of 11 shots wasn’t all that impressive. They didn’t look much more likely to score than their opponents.

It’s probable that their best chance of winning the tie and advancing to the Europa League group stages was in finding some way to steal a win at home, but Milsami still deserve plenty of credit for their determination and grit last week. They tied the game up not long after halftime and played well despite having to be without the ball for much of the contest.

For those who didn’t watch the club’s other games in European football this season, it’s worth noting that Milsami do have a little more to give than they showed against Saint Etienne. Still, the occasion combined with the organisation of the opposition and the challenge of travelling to win a tie in France is a challenge like no other that the Moldovan side would have faced.

      Three Reasons for Betting Tips

      1. The evidence was in the first leg

Saint Etienne controlled the flow of the game, they controlled the football and they looked like a better quality football team. However, they still didn’t look like a side ready to score lots of goals. We’ll back Milsami to keep this to a one goal game, even if the odds against them doing something incredible are pretty tough. They’ll have enough grit to stop ASSE from scoring two goals for only the second time this season and the first since July.

      2. Milsami are a good side

They did well against Ludogorets and they have a tenacity and style of play that should translate to an effective away performance, even in Europe. They’ve had a mixed start to their domestic campaign and it’s very possible that the better version of this side will show up on Thursday for one more crack in this competition.

      3. Saint Etienne are not worth their odds

Something isn’t quite right about St Etienne right now. Perhaps they’ll re-discover their solidity and structure as the season progresses, but the club’s younger players are not clicking right now and they look somewhat susceptible at the back while not looking potent going forward either, it’s a bad combination. They are not worth the 1/8 to win and based on current form, we cannot see them winning a Europa League deciding leg by two clear goals.

      Saint Etienne 2-1 Milsami

The game may play out in a similar fashion to the first leg, but this time Saint Etienne will find some way to break the deadlock and assure themselves of a place in the group stages.
