Freiburg vs Darmstadt Predictions
Freiburg ended their streak of three consecutive defeats with an impressive 1-1 draw away to Bayer Leverkusen last weekend. The South Germans now have more points on the board (16) before the Christmas break than in either of their last two seasons in the top flight (15 in the 2014/2015 season and just 14 in the 2013/2014 season). With three matches remaining before the holidays, Freiburg should fancy their chances to take this record even further, starting with a match at home to the out-of-form Darmstadt 98.
Darmstadt’s woes continued as a 2-0 defeat at home to bottom of the table Hamburg last Sunday marked their 5th successive Bundesliga defeat. Including the embarrassing 1-0 defeat away to German fourth tier side Astoria Walldorf in the DFB Pokal a few weeks back, Darmstadt are without a win in six matches. To make matters worse, the Lilies are the only Bundesliga side yet to take a point from any of their matches on the road (L6).
With one of the better home records in the Bundesliga – Christian Streich’s side have collected twelve points from a possible eighteen at the Schwarzwald-Stadion (W4 L2) – Freiburg are the bookies’ favourites ahead of this match at 4/6. Though we also fancy Freiburg’s chances here, we feel that both teams to score at 10/11 has slightly more value for the following reasons: despite Darmstadt’s atrocious form, they’ve actually performed better on the road than at home in recent weeks. Darmstadt may have failed to score in any of their last three matches at the Jonathan-Heimes-Stadion in front of the home fans, but the Lilies have put up a decent fight, scoring at least one goal, over a set of difficult away fixtures against Mainz 05, Bayer Leverkusen and the in-form Schalke 04. Freiburg are consistent in front of goal and have only failed to score in one of their last ten Bundesliga matches, but the South Germans also can’t deny their tendency to concede – both teams have scored in six of Freiburg’s last seven (86%) Bundesliga matches.
Nonetheless, we still feel Freiburg should have the edge after analysing last weekend’s respective performances. Especially when taking into account Darmstadt’s dwindling confidence and worsening form. Following from the above, a correct score bet of 2-1 at 7/1 seems a reasonable shout here.
