Shrewsbury vs Bristol City Predictions

  • When the pair met in the initial tie, Shrewsbury came out on top in terms of both possession and shots.
  • Bristol City have won just one of their last five travelling FA Cup matches.
  • Shrewsbury have lost none of their last 11 FA Cup matches at New Meadow.

New Meadow tough place to go

As many a team has found out in this competition over the last few years, New Meadow is a very tough place to go. The Shrews may not be the most exciting team in the world, but they’re experts at putting home advantage to good use, especially in this competition. Shrewsbury have lost none of their last 11 FA Cup matches at home, a run that stretches back to 2016. Three of those 11 matches have been against sides from one of the top two divisions. In 2018, Tuesday’s hosts drew at home to both West Ham and Stoke, while they also held Wolves to a draw at this venue in 2019.

In terms of recent domestic form, Shrewsbury have been a bit up and down, even at home, but their results show that they’re by no means an easy team to get the better of, as Bristol City discovered less than a fortnight ago. Sam Rickett’s men have lost two of their last five at home, but neither of those losses were by more than a single goal, while they’ve only lost three out of 12 at home this term.

Moreover, when the pair met in the initial tie, Shrewsbury showed that they can mix it with teams from the Championship, as they were full value for a draw. They even bettered their hosts in terms of both possession and shots, while they registered the same number of shots on target.

Robins back on the up

After a couple of underwhelming results, Bristol City bounced back last time out, beating Wigan by two goals to nil. Such a win should give Lee Johnson’s men the required boost ahead of what will inevitably be a tough game at New Meadow.

Being a Championship side, the Robins will fancy themselves to make amends on Tuesday, but their efforts in the initial game weren’t overly encouraging. They failed to dominate League 1 opponents, who narrowly had the better of the game in terms of both possession and shots and who, at the very least, were equal in terms of attacking threat.

Not only did Bristol City fail to really put their stamp on the game at Ashton Gate, but their recent away-day efforts in the Championship haven’t been great. They frankly dominated by Wigan last time out, so much so that they were very fortunate to walk away with a two-goal victory, while they’d lost two on the bounce prior to that, losing against Charlton and Sheffield Wednesday. In both of those games, the Robins once again failed to really leave their mark.

Hosts underappreciated

After their excellent effort at Ashton Gate, where they matched a team from the level above stride for stride, the Shrews deserve more respect ahead of a home match. If anything, as they hit the post late on, Shrewsbury were ever so slightly unlucky not to avoid the replay, so it’s not difficult to see them doing the business at New Meadow. At the prices, ‘Shrewsbury Draw No Bet’ stands out as the best option. The hosts are very tough to beat at home, while they have a promising home record in this competition. In contrast, Bristol City underwhelmed in the original tie and haven’t exactly covered themselves in glory on the road of late either.
