Southampton vs Manchester City Predictions

Southampton haven’t given up on European football yet. They come into this match in 8th position in the Premier League, one point behind Liverpool, two behind West Ham, and five behind Manchester United. However, each of these teams have a game in hand on Southampton, so it could be a battle to leapfrog any of them.

A 7th place finish in the table could give them a Europa League spot, but only if Manchester United win the FA Cup. If they don’t, they would need to finish 6th or higher to claim a spot in the continental competition.

The Saints are in good form at the moment as well. They beat Southampton 4-2 last weekend to take their recent record to four wins, two draws, and one defeat in their last seven matches in Premier League. They haven’t been shy in front of goal during this period either, with an average of two goals per game being scored and four of their last six matches seeing at least three goals scored.

Manchester City are coming into this match on the back of a hard slog at home to Real Madrid, and facing a difficult trip to the Bernebau on Wednesday. They managed to get a goalless draw at home to the Spanish Giants, but this means they need to avoid defeat in Madrid to make it to the Champions League Final.

This goalless draw did extend their unbeaten streak in all competitions to eight games, but despite this they are still facing a battle in the Premier League. They come into this game in 3rd position, but they are only ahead of Arsenal on goal difference and have Manchester United lurking five points behind them, desperate for a Champions League spot. The 5th place side have a game in hand as well, so the pressure is on at Manchester City to finish the domestic season strongly.

Their Champions League ties may be tight and cagey affairs, but you can’t say the same about their Premier League outings. Their 4-0 win against Stoke last weekend took their goals tally to 14 in their last five league matches, with four of these five games seeing at least three goals.

This makes odds of 10/11 for Over 2.5 Goals look very good value to me, and I’m also going to back a 2-2 correct score prediction at 11/1.
