Spain vs Faroe Islands Predictions

Winners of five out of five in Group F, Spain have been predictably good in qualifying. Sunday’s hosts will be looking for nothing other than a sixth win when they host a weak Faroe Islands side at El Molinon on Sunday evening.

Spain’s path in qualifying has been a relatively uncomplicated one; they’ve made light work of beating minnows such as Malta and Faroe Islands, while they’ve also had more than enough quality to get the better of Norway, Sweden and Romania.

Despite playing away in Bucharest on Friday, which isn’t exactly the easiest place to go, Spain exerted their usual control and were in fact easier winners than the 1-2 score-line suggested. But for an excellent showing from Romanian stopper Ciprian Tătăruşanu, La Roja would’ve had the game wrapped up before the half-time whistle was blown.

This will be Spain’s third qualifier on home soil. They’ve scored five in the previous two and have generally offered a significant amount going forward, averaging 3.43 expected goals for and 22.5 shots for. It doesn’t look good for Sunday’s visitors, who shipped four goals in the reverse fixture.

While Spain have made light work of scoring goals in qualifying, Faroe Islands have found it tough to keep teams at bay. The minnows have conceded four goals in three of their five qualifiers, shipping an average of 3.2 goals overall in Group F.

On a more positive not, Faroe Islands have scored in three of their five games, notching at home to Spain and away in Romania. If they were able to repeat their efforts in Bucharest, where they not only found the net but created a pleasing 1.47 expected goals for, then Lars Olsen’s men would stand a chance of getting involved offensively at El Molinon, though they are likely to enjoy much less possession against the Spanish, so chances will be few and far between for the visitors.

From a betting point of view, this isn’t a particularly appealing game. It would be a miracle if the visitors prevented Spain from winning, so much so that it would be greatly surprising if the Spanish didn’t win by a wide margin, as the current odds suggest.

Those looking to get involved could try ‘Spain to Win & Both Teams to Score’ at a big price. Make no mistake about it, the visitors are more likely to not score than they are to find the back of the Spanish net, though they might just have a slightly greater chance than the current prices would have us believe. For all they lack the overall quality to compete, Faroe Islands, who can threaten on the break, have scored against both Romania and Spain, while they also average 0.86 expected goals for. Their chances to score certainly won’t be plentiful on Sunday, but at the prices, it’s worth a small bet that Spain, who have looked susceptible to counter-attack, get the job done without keeping a clean sheet.
